Evolving the Technique

As Jani, John, and Nasif began discussing the ball speed project , Jani suggested that it would be important to add a second camera view to allow the position of the ball to be determined more accurately in any given frame.

This would allow them to determine the exact position of the ball by cross checking the information from one camera with the other. Determining the ball position with real certainty would be much more difficult and subject to error with only a one camera view. Nasif and John agreed. The team decided to try repeat the filming at the 1997 Sybase and try for two cameras.

Once again the support of Barry MacKay proved crucial. When John asked him about the second camera, he volunteered to let the team place it right on the platform with the television cameras televising the event! This camera position was also high enough to film the entire court, with the camera lined up so the lens was now perpendicular to the baseline, filming across both baselines, with one baseline in the foreground and the other visible on the other side of the net.
